New Landscapes for 2006

2006 turned out to be one of my most creative seasons. 20 years ago when I entered the horticulture world we were in the middle of the Cottage Garden craze. At the time I loved working with the challenges of colour, timing, and textures of perennials. For the last little while gardens have simplified considerably. So I was so happy to get clients who just wanted colour again. Loved this year. I have now added a few one year later photos you would be amazed at some of the growth. Large Backyard 1

Most of my designing is done in the winter. This is what I normally see and often have to guess as to what lies beneath.

Large Backyard 2

This yard had many elements throughout that was united around a large slate patterned block deck

Large Backyard 3

The old soil had to be removed, recontoured and then resodded

Large Backyard 4

Something huge this year was pondless waterfalls where full waterfalls fall into a bed of large rock. I redesigned the pond so that it could have either visible water or have the water lie just beneath the surface.

Sidewalk Redo 1

The old cement was cracked and sunken. Once repaired the bricks were layed ontop

Sidewalk Redo 2

The client had a beautiful stain glass block that was encorporated into the brick work

Sidewalk Redo 3

The spring time colours worked in perfectly with red charcoal European Cobble stone

Deck Redo 1

Here the old cement had sloped inwards to the house a potentially dangerous flooding problem

Deck Redo 2

An amazing wood deck was built and then we add a raised European Northern Blend patio with an inlayed path and circle.

Deck Redo 3

I was in love with this deck when it was finished. I would like to see this with a wet look sealant to bring out the colour.

New Bed 1

When designing a new flower bed you should try as much as possible to have a garden that has 3 completely different looks

New Bed 2

Spring is so important to have bright colours to get you excited for the coming year

New Bed 3

Full rich colour pulls people outside to wonder the grounds every time

New Bed 4

One of my favourite times is the fall with coloured leaves and flowers

Japanese Garden 1

Quite a few years ago I built a Japanese garden in the style of a tea garden and it was nice to see it come to fruition

Japanese Garden 2

This is a Lion Scare where the water fills a bamboo flute that when heavy drops and makes a large clap.

Japanese Garden 3

A very nice view of the snow lantern

Japanese Garden 4

All gardens should look good in all the seasons.

Alpine Garden 1

The most important part of this design was getting a shared vision between what the client thought an alpine garden should look like and what I thought.

Alpine Garden 1a

We played around quite a lot with the design making 3 areas two kinds of alpine gardens and one traditional perennial border

Alpine Garden 1b

Just a fun picture of the little touches the home owners wanted in the garden

Steep slope 1

Steep slopes are always difficult because they tend to be harder on the plant material

Steep slope 2

Mulches are one of the most important choices to keep the slope stable and to keep the soil moist and protect the plants

Steep Slope 3

Although the patio changed many times during and even after the building the result was very cool

Low Maintenance 1

Creating a cactus garden with a waterfall and finding green bricks, what was I thinking when I was designing

Low Maintenance 2

One of my suppliers pulled through at the last moment with a pallet of fantastically beautiful glacial green slate that was put on a bed of mortar and sealed with polymeric sand

Low Maintenance 3

With the right soil amendments the grass was a thick green carpet within 3 weeks

Low Maintenance 4

This is a pondless waterfall which is fairly new to Edmonton. I cheated a little and made it deeper so that the client had the option of creating a pond

Low Maintenance 5

Good mix of a coloured barkchip that is suppose to keep its colour for 3 years and a dark green limestone

Smallest Yard Ever 1

Yet still took an incredible amount of time to build

Smallest Yard Ever 2

By using one mulch and spreading out over the parking pad we easily tripled the feeling of size

Smallest Yard Ever 3

The plantings are meant to have a new flower through out the summer, create a little destination and a view from the deck

Smallest Yard Ever 4

Under the mulch is a soaker hose system that helped the plants recover quickly and put a few extra blossoms this year
