Aconitum napellus - MonkshoodPoisonous Ranunculaceae K. Napora
European perennial that prefers partial shade, fertile soil high in organic matter. If put in the full sun you must have increase moisture otherwise it will be stunted. Cultural Practices: Propagation - generally through clump division in spring or fall. The plant is slow to increase in size, and does not like being transplanted. Needs to be staked or caged early to keep the plant from falling over when the flowers come out. Diseases - Delphinium leaf tire (Attacks in May, treat with a systemic) Crown rot, and Powdery Mildew in July Poisonous - "So acrid is the poison, that the juice applied to a wounded finger affects the whole system, not only causing pains in the limbs, but a sense of suffocation and fainting". (M. Grieve) The plant has a long history of being used to poison wells and thereby killing off whole towns. Landscape Value: Other Plant - Aconitum X cammarum 'Bicolor' - violet-blue and white combination flowers a little earlier than the blue coloured species Best used in the back of a border and is good in combination with echinacea and heliopsis |
