Aruncus dioicus - Goat's BeardRosaceae
Northern hemisphere perennial, that prefers partial shade, with rich moist soil. The plant will be smaller in higher sun areas, the leaves tend to burn in full sun. Cultural Practices: Propagation - Clump division in fall. The plant is an early starter and if you divide it in spring I find that it stunts it the first year. Haven't found any troubles with the plant although there is a dwarf variety that often gets misnamed. So many times you will be expecting a large plant in the back that never pans out even with fertilizing. Landscape Value: Use - This is a background plant that is important for its height and texture. The flowers are beautiful in late June but turn brown quickly. The flowers must be removed just under the canopy and will give an excellent backdrop to your other perennials. In good years the flowers may remain a soft cream into July. The flowers are fuzzy and when using with other plants I prefer that they are strong structural flowers like Lilies, Lupines, Monkshood, and peonies. Otherwise the overall look could become messy. |
