Astilbe X arendsii - Astilbe

Saxifragaceae

Preferences:

Chinese, Japanese, Korean perennial that will grow in full sun but is better in partial shade with fertile, organic soil. Astilbes require moist soil more so than the type of sun; therefore, they are usually in partial shade.

Cultural Practices:

Propagtion - Sow seeds in February at 12 - 16 degrees, for 30 - 90 days under light. Takes two years to flower when done from seed. Divisions are done in spring.

Landscape Value:

Common Cultivars - There are way to many different varieties of excellent colours and sizes.

Other plants - Astilbe chinensis 'Pumila' is a chinese dwarf variety with lavender pink flowers in August to late September.

Use - This is a must for all shade areas or a  border's accent. Mix with hosta, pulmonaria, pink daylilies, Japanese anemone, liatris and lilies.
