Convallaria majalis - Lily-of-the-ValleyPoisonous Liliaceae
European, Asian and North American perennial that is a strong shade groundcover. It prefers full to partial shade, best in shaded areas though. Tolerant of most soil conditions. Organic matter needed for nice flowering. Cultural Practices: Propagation - This can be done by seed but the primary method is through division. The plant has an exceedingly tenacious root system. Remove chunks with a very sharp spade and then divide the chunks with a fork. Culture - This plant is very poisonous and should not be planted where young children or puppies will be around. The plant though is superb for shady areas that require an extremely hardy plant. The roots are white and fibrous and have the ability to choke most weeds. On occasion, rhizomatous weeds will come up underneath the patch. Allow the weeds to grow above the canopy and then sponge with Round-up. Cut back in fall or by late April. The new shoots will come up very quickly and make cutting back difficult. Fertilization - I find if you use grass fertilizer 14 - 7 - 7 you get better greening of the leaves. They tend to grow very quickly and overtime will take on a yellowish chlorotic appearance as they run out of nitrogen. Landscape Value: |
