Fuchsia X hybrida - Hybrid Fuchsia

obviously a stolen picture

Preferences:

Hybrids are created but the parents are probably from F. fulgens and F. magellanica.

These plants are very delicate and almost fake looking. The need water daily and grow in indirect light or light shade. Full sun will fry the leaves turning them brown. Remove the flowers regularly and fertilize every second week if in a hanging basket. I have been told that if you let the berries develop fully then the flowering diminish.

Cultural Practices:

Propagation: take cuttings in February or March from a parent plant

Culture: Fuchsia flowers on new growth. The plants should be pinched back every second node until the end of May. This will encourage branching.

Problems: They are very susceptible to aphids, spider mite, and whitefly.

Landscape Value:

Common varieties: Double flowering Trailing - 'Blue Eyes' (red and orchid), 'Dark Eyes' (red and purple), 'Swingtime' (red and white); Single Flowered Trailing - 'Tinkerbell' (white lacy)
