Hemerocallis - Daylily

Liliaceae

Preferences:

This is a horticultural perennial, that is 3' to 4' tall. They like full sun or partial shade (they will grow in full shade but with very few late flowers). They do best in soils well supplied with organic matter and well drained. Over fertilization will produce more leaves than flowers.

Cultural Practices:

Propagation - After cold/wet stratification for 4 to 8 weeks (May require two chilling periods so one an sow in the fall and leave the pots outside for two winters) sow seeds at 16 - 21 degrees fro 30 - 90 days. The seeds can take up to 3 years to flower. The clumps can also be divided in fall or spring. The roots are thick, orange, and dandelion type roots that are easy to divide.

Cultural - There are no problems with Daylily other than its fast growth. The species type of daylilies grow so quickly that they can become invasive. The newer hybrids are slower growing and stay put better. Daylily buds that have not opened have a soft peppery taste. The new hybrids don't have much taste though.

Landscape Value:

A vast amount of hybridization has gone into Daylilies. Here are some of the more popular and standard types.

Lavender - 'Prairie Blue Eyes'
