Heuchera sanguinea - Coral Bells(Saxifragaceae) K. Napora
One of the most versatile of plants, they grow well in both full sun and partial shade. The best growth is in well drained soil with good moisture and organic matter Cultural Practices: Cultural: Plants are exceedingly easy to grow with no pest problem. Coral bells have a very long blooming period from late spring through the summer. For a nice look remove the dead brown flower scapes. In the fall don't cut the leaves, just remove the dead flowers. In the spring tidy the plant by removing the brown leaves. Landscape Value: It is getting harder to find some of the older cultivars as breeders seem to be moving more into the leaf colour cultivars. The green leaf varieties have the bright pink to red flowers, that work very well with most cool coloured perennials. The coloured leaf varieties e.g. purple leaf, and bronze leaf cultivars generally have small lanky white flowers. They prefer shady conditions and are excellent at giving the garden a rich base. |
