Hosta

Hosta species (Liliaceae)

K. Napora

Preferences:

Chinese and Japanese perennial from 10" to 18" tall. Hostas have a mounded habit

Hostas prefer partial shade to full shade with good organic matter content for water retention. Too much sun will cause a blanching and then a scorching. Too much shade and moisture will cause high slug problems

Flowers are lavender blue or white borne above the leaves on scapes about 18" to 24" tall

Cultural Practices:

A vast amount of breeding has gone on with Hostas. They are a standard in all shady garden designs and come in all shapes and sizes. The plants should be divided in spring but the plants will generally flower in the second season after divisions, although this isn't usually why the plant is used in the landscape. The plant is one of the last plants to come up in the spring. It is extremely hardy but susceptible to hail damage and slug damage.

Landscape Value:

Some of my Favourite Hostas: Hosta sieboldiana 'Frances William' large green yellow leaves, 'Elegans' blue leaves, 'Krossa Regal' huge fast growing green leaves, 'Sum and Substance' one of the largest Hostas that are regularly shown in magazines but I have found it to be very slow. May grow better in more looked after conditions. 'Patriot' one of my new favourites on the market with deep rich green and bright white variegation.
