Liatris spicata- Gayfeather

(Asteraceae a new family name for the old Compositae name)

Preferences:

This is a North American perennial that prefers full sun or light shade in light soils. Not a very fussy plant although will flower a little later if planted in  cool shaded conditions. Flowers in August

Cultural Practices:

Propagation - Sow seeds at 20 degrees C for 3 - 4 weeks. Generally takes 2 years to flower. The roots can be divided in the spring and should be divided every 4 years.

Landscape Value:

Because of its upright stance the plant is generally used in formal arrangements. When planted with white Cerastium tomentosum (Carpet of snow) or variegated plants the colour will be intensified. Try not planting with plants that will wash out its blue colour, that is, with other stronger blues, intense reds, or abundant green foliage.
