Ligularia - Ray Flower(Asteraceae a new name for the old Compositae family name)
A Chinese and Japanese perennial that grows from 3' to 5' tall. This is a robust plant similar in size to rhubarb. It prefers partial shade in rich moist soil. Full sun can be tolerated for a short period in the day but there will be excessive wilting and slow growth. Cultural Practices: Propagation - For seeding after cold/wet stratification for 4 - 6 weeks sow seeds at 12 - 18 degrees C for 30 to 90 days under light. The seeds can take up to a year to germinate. Culture - The plant is very hardy and is heat tolerant but it needs high moisture. During the day the plant may look almost dead from excessive wilting but will bounce back overnight. The plant is long lived and does not need division. It is best to remove the dead flower heads. Is also susceptible to hail damage and some slug damage (although not a lot because there are more tasty things to eat) Landscape Value: Use this in the back of the border in shaded conditions. It is nice mixed with Astilbe, Hydrangea, Daylily, and hostas. The most common ligularia is Ligularia stenocephala 'The Rocket', 'Othello' is a short species with a different type of flat flower. |
