Monarda didyma - Bee Balm

Lamiaceae, Labiatae

Preferences:

This is a North American perennial; 2' - 4' tall with a spreading habit. It prefers Full sun or partial shade, in rich moist well drained soil. Will be strongly affected by powdery mildew if it is too shady.

Cultural Practices:

Propagation: is mainly through division which should be done every 2 - 4 years. The roots are invasive, and varieties should be planted well apart. I have found that there seems to be a tendency for the plant to kill off other plants around it so give it some space. It is best to choose varieties that are powdery mildew resistant because the plant can be covered in bad years.

Landscape Value:

This plant, along with yarrow, Cerastium, Delphinium, is a must for gardens that need a quick start. They are scented and very showy.

Common Cultivars: Garden View Scarlet, 'Marshall's Delight' have good mildew resistance.

Monarda fistulosa - horsemint - beautiful purple colour but very susceptible to powdery mildew this is a prairie native and is extremely hardy.
