Phlox paniculata - Garden Phlox

Polemoniaceae

Preferences:

Southeastern USA perennial that grows to 2' to 3' tall with an erect habit. It prefers full sun to light shade, with good organic matter and good fertilization.

Cultural Practices:

Propagation: is usually through clump division. Dig the clumps in fall and remove all large roots to within 2"  of the crown which is then replanted. To root cuttings cut the roots into 2" lengths and place in sandy soil; cover 1/2" deep and transplant out in spring. Seeds can be sown at 21C for 3 -4 weeks under dark conditions.

Culture: This plant needs maintenance and should be treated much like you would treat Delphiniums. If planted in rich soil they will need staking. Deadheading is important to prolong blooming. Also it is susceptible to powdery mildew and oddly enough seems to attract ants within the roots. When planting ensure that it has air; crowding will only invite problems. I generally don't use this plant for novice gardens. I have found that it needs fussing.

Landscape Value:

Common Cultivars: 'David' white, mildew resistant and very fragrant. 'Flamingo' large clear pink and red centres, 'Icecaps' white a newer introduction which is very resistant to powdery mildew. 'Starfire' one of my favourites with bright fuchsia red and dark leaves, no resistance that I have seen.
