Valeriana officinalis - ValerianValerianaceae
European perennial; 3 1/2' to 5' tall; erect habit. They prefer full sun to partial shade in rich moist, humus soil. Planting in a drier soil though will control their height. Valerian tolerates a wide range of pH. Cultural Practices: Propagation: Generally through crown and runner divisions in spring or fall, the plant should be divided every 3 years. They also self seed very easily. Cultural: I like this plant it is tall, bright and very hardy. However, there is also lots of bad. The plant does not have a good smell and never ever let this one go to seed. Well worth having in the garden but only for good gardeners. Landscape Value: Use - Valerian is the parent of valium the plant is used internally for insomnia, hysteria, anxiety, and migraine. Excess can cause headaches, extended use may lead to addictions. Harvesting - The roots and rhizomes are lifted in the second year after the leaves have died off and used fresh or dried. Dry quickly and thoroughly at 120F until brittle. The roots keep their odour and flavour for a long time. (Note I use the word odour and not scent) This plant is fantastic in designing meadow gardens with grasses, Echinacea, Rudbeckias, yarrows, and Monardas.
