Zinnia elegans - Zinnia
Preferences: Mexican annual, that likes full sun, fertile well drained soil rich in organic matter. Best under hot dry conditions as this reduces the problem of mildew Cultural Practices: Propagation - Sow on April 15 at 21 degrees C for 5 - 7 days. Cultural - Never water late in the day and avoid getting moisture on the leaves. It is best to soak when watering but be sure to water and fertilize regularly. Can use a fungicide or a mixture of 1 tbsp/gallon of baking soda. Pinching young plants will result in more blooms but smaller plants, remove the blossoms. Landscape Value: Common Series: Peter Pan (10" - 12" tall), Thumbelina (6"), Lilliput mix (18" pompom), Cactus (3' daisy type), State Fair (3' - 4' tetraploid, 5" - 6" flowers, mildew resistant) Excellent plant used in the background and good when mixed with China asters. |
